Q&A with Dr. Marcus Higgins | Canmore Chiropractor

How long have you been practicing as a Chiropractor and when did you move to Canmore?

I graduated and started practicing as a Chiropractor in 2016. After working at a clinic in London, UK for 5 years, I relocated to Canmore in 2021. I have been practicing out of GAiN Physical Health for 9 months, after moving from a clinic in Calgary.

What additional training have you completed on top of your Chiropractic studies?

Expanding my training and skills as a clinician is really important to me so I regularly attend courses and seminars. Over the years I’ve studied SFMA (Selective Movement Assessment), FMS (Functional Movement Screen), TPI (Titleist Professional Institute) for my Golfers, TMJ (Temporomandibular Assessment and Treatment), DNS (Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation) and specifically for my low back pain patients, the McGill Seminars and the McKenzie Method.

How does your additional training help you as a Chiropractor?

The additional training helps me stay current on the latest evidence-based treatment, assessment, and management of my patients conditions. Additionally, learning different treatment and rehabilitative techniques allows me to pick the best method for the presenting complaint, versus using a one size fits all approach.

What can your patients expect from their initial assessment with you?

I will take a detailed history, and listen to my patients complaint, asking specific questions that help me determine a possible diagnoses. I will then carry out a full body biomechanical assessment with additional orthopaedic and neurological testing. I will always give an explanation of the diagnosis (source of pain) and discuss additional factors that could lead to the production of symptoms (cause of pain). Depending on the complexity of the complaint, treatment is offered on the first visit.

Do you have a typical treatment plan for your patients, or does it vary?

My treatment plans will vary due to a number of factors, including:

  1. Is the patient looking for a short team or a long-term fix?
  2. Any previous trauma and surgery
  3. Number of areas affected
  4. Activity levels
  5. Length of time the patient has had the complaint
  6. Severity of the complaint
  7. Secondary health conditions e.g. diabetes, heart disease etc
  8. Age of the patient

I always work with my patients, treating them according to their specific goals. I work hard to get people back to doing what they love as soon as I can, whether that’s getting them through a day pain free, getting them back on their skis or bike, or training for an event.

Tell us about your proudest moment working as a Chiropractor?

Working in the English Premier League, helping footballers (soccer players) from the 1st Team and development squads stay fit was a very proud moment. Being able to work, and learn with so many experienced health care professionals and trainers was amazing.
